Achiasmy Synthesis

Synthesis/review paper on achiasmatic meiosis across the tree of life. Meghann McConnell lead. Combines curated database with phylogenetic context and literature-mined expansion.

Status: active

Current hypothesis:

Achiasmy evolves preferentially in the heterogametic sex as a mechanism to suppress recombination between sex chromosomes; transitions to achiasmy are concentrated in lineages where sex chromosome differentiation is advanced and selection to maintain linkage between sex-determining and sexually antagonistic loci is strongest. The phylogenetic distribution of achiasmy is therefore non-random with respect to sex-determination system and sex chromosome age.

Next action:

Heath to review new figures; Meghann to incorporate HB edits from 14 April
