bioRxiv preprint · April 2026 Dismantling chromosomal stasis across the eukaryotic tree of life Copeland, McConnell, Barboza, et al.
A synthesis of 63,682 karyotypes across 55 eukaryotic clades. Dysploidy rates vary by a factor of 844 across the tree of life. Birds, long taught as the textbook case of chromosomal stasis, sit above the global median once microchromosome dynamics are resolved. Chromosomal stasis, the paper argues, tracks life history rather than taxonomic group, and the old textbook stories need revising at the eukaryote scale.
