NeEukaryotes
Ne proxies (dN/dS and geographic range size) as predictors of dysploidy rate across eukaryotic clades. PGLS analysis. Part of chromosomal stasis flagship paper supplement.
Status: active
Current hypothesis:
Effective population size (Ne), proxied by dN/dS and geographic range size, is a negative predictor of dysploidy rate across eukaryotes: lineages with lower Ne experience weaker purifying selection against mildly deleterious chromosomal rearrangements, accelerating chromosome number evolution. The PGLS slope (~0.87, p≈0.06) from the animals-only dataset is expected to strengthen and reach conventional significance when non-animal clades are incorporated.
